Hope Run 2019
“Our 1st Annual Hope Run - April 27th, 2019”
by Crystal Sutherland
We want to thank all who were able to us for our 1st Annual Hope Run in support of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month! It went so well, and completely exceeded our expectations! It was last year, about this time, that Hope Run was just one of several ideas tossed around among our Board of Directors. We discussed ways to raise awareness and funds for our ministry, and the idea of having a fun run was put on the table. This year with the help of many we were able to see that idea become a reality!
The heart behind this race was to raise awareness to the epidemic and impact of sexual abuse in America, and offer HOPE, because that is a big part of what we do at JTHM. In addition to raising awareness, we also raised over $5K over and above the cost to host this event!
To our surprise, the support for this event was incredible! Much of that had to do with our event coordinator, Emily Parker, who also sits on our founding board. She took this idea we had last year and ran with it! The result was amazing and clearly a blessing from God.
We teamed up with Eva Pittman of Lady Runners in Leland, and organization Eva has developed to provide a fun way for women of all fitness levels to join the fun of running for FUN! She felt God was leading her to offer us help in launching our first run, and she did an amazing job of it!
One of our goals was to hit 200 runners for our first year. We actually thought it would end up being more like 50-75! When we began to surpass our goal of 200 the week of the race, the one man on our board - Randy Reed - cheerfully challenged that IF we got to 228 runners, he would wear a teal tu-tu! Well, guess what?….
We are beyond grateful for Randy’s commitment to our team, AND the 249 runners and walkers who registered to run our first race, and for every sponsor, donor, and volunteer who helped to make this important awareness event possible! Their participation has and will continue to make a huge impact on survivors in our local community, as well as those we know and serve across the country!
It was exciting to see 25 race participants join us virtually from CA, NY, IN, FL, WA and all over NC…many of whom are survivors or know someone who is. We were absolutely blown away by all the support!
No matter how or where you participated in Hope Run this year, your involvement tells survivors, “I see you and I care."
Thank you for that!
